A notice of loss must be filed no later than 15 days after the end of the insurance period for federal crop insurance policies.
The end of the insurance period is the earlier of:
- Total destruction of the unit
- Abandonment
- Harvest of the unit
- The calendar date for the end of the insurance period
End of insurance calendar dates:
- Sept 30 – Dry peas
- Oct 15 – Grass seed, potatoes
- Oct 31 – Dry beans, barley, wheat, flax, rye, canola
- Nov 15 – Sugar beets
- Nov 30 – Sunflowers
- Dec 10 – Corn and soybeans
When there is only a revenue loss under the RP plan of insurance, notice must be filed within 45 days of the date RMA issues the harvest price for the crop.
Note: Dry pea and dry bean harvest prices aren’t released until January 15. If the harvest price is lower than the base price, the insured has an until March 1 to file a claim for a revenue loss.
