Canola/Sunflower Weekly Comments September 25

Canola slowly climbed higher throughout Monday’s session, closing with strong gains. Support came from the sharply higher soybean complex and the higher European rapeseed market. Slow harvest pace across the Canadian Prairies added support, although this week looks to be warmer and drier. Gains were limited by the steep losses in the crude oil market.

In Tuesday’s session canola saw small gains for the first part of the overnight session before turning lower. The market added to the losses in the day session and closed solidly lower, erasing most of Monday’s gains. Pressure came from the steep losses in the soybean oil market. Pressure also spilled over from the lower crude oil market. Warmer and drier conditions across the Canadian Prairies that will get harvest back on track added to the losses.

Canola traded mostly on the lower side in Wednesday’s choppy session but was able to get on the positive side at the end of the session and closed with small gains. Pressure came from the lower soybean complex and speculative selling. Manitoba’s canola harvest is now 43% complete vs. 45% last year. Yields are coming in below average to average. A private Chinese company bought a cargo of Australian canola. This is just the second private sale of Australian canola since trade reopened between the countries in mid-2025.

On Thursday canola closed on both sides of unchanged in a choppy session but found strength late in the day session to close with gains. Support spilled over from the strong gains in the crude oil market. The weaker Canadian dollar, now at a two-month low, added support. But gains were limited by harvest pressure and the lower soybean complex.

Thursday’s cash sunflower bids in Fargo were at $26.50. Cash canola bids in Fargo were at $24.75. Cash bids in Velva were at $25.17.

As of September 20, North Dakota’s canola harvest was 79% complete vs. 63% last week and 69% average.

As of September 20, North Dakota’s sunflowers turning yellow were at 73% vs. 61% last week and 70% average. Sunflowers turning brown were at 33% vs. 30% last week and 31% average. The sunflower crop condition rating decreased 4% to 40% g/e, 45% fair, and 15% p/vp.

For the week, Nov canola was at $828.60 up $6.30. Jan canola closed at $841.40 up $8.40.
